Following the Volkswagen case that has surfaced recently, Transport Malta has immediately communicated with local importers of VW cars and has requested official information about vehicles that may be affected, the authoroty said in a statement today.  

This information will help with the necessary checks, it added.

Transport Malta is being regularly updated on the developments and will discuss the way forward in line with established practices throughout the European Union.

VW has been accused of installing the so-called "defeat device" in 482,000 cars sold in the United States. VW later acknowledged that similar software exists in 11 million diesel cars worldwide and set aside 6.5 billion euros ($7.2 billion) to cover the costs of the scandal.
