More than 500,000 migrants have made it into Europe via the sea since the start of this year, the International organisation for Migration said.

It has been calculated that 2,892 migrants died in the crossings.

In total, 522,134 migrants crossed from north Africa towards Europe - 388,324 arrived in Greece, 130,891 in Italy and 2,819 in Spain.

The numbers do not include the migrants that are making their way into Europe on land.
