Minister Bartolo to thrash out sexuality education uproar on Friday

Sunday, 18 October 2015, 10:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

With a debate raging over the teaching of sex and sexuality, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo has accepted an invitation to set the record straight next week on Exodus, which will be aired on Friday at 8.30pm on FLiving.

Since Ivan Grech Mintoff, the leader of the Alleanza Bidla political party started a raging debate on how sex and sexuality are being taught to primary schoolchildren, the issue has exploded on the social media.

Over 6,000 people have joined a Facebook group – Parents and Teachers against the Gender Indoctrination of our Children – venting their concern on the issue. Some have taken to Mr Bartolo’s Facebook page to express their concerns, concerns which he has sought to allay.

Mr Bartolo has now accepted an invitation to thrash out the issue in full next Friday.

Mr Grech Mintoff comments, “We the parents demand respect for our legal and human rights, the immediate removal of any educational material that goes against our religious and philosophical beliefs and a total cessation of sexuality education until all parents and relative parents have been consulted properly and their approval given. We live in a civilised country not a totalitarian state. High values and morals make our society special. This is our inheritance and we will pass it on to the next generations. We urge others to join us in protecting our children from this extreme, harmful and unwanted liberalism.”

The Malta Union of Teachers stated last week: “MUT declares that before any sort of important development, be it this one or any other, a proper consultation exercise should be carried out with teachers, school management teams, and parents. In this country, we usually consult after things are done, which is unacceptable.”
