Associated Press Tuesday, 20 October 2015, 07:59 Last update: about 11 years ago

CANADA-ELECTION

TORONTO — Canadians vote for a sharp change in their government, returning a legendary name for liberals, Trudeau, to the prime minister's office and resoundingly ending Conservative Stephen Harper's near-decade in office.

PRESIDENTIAL RACE-BIDEN

WASHINGTON — He's running! He's about to decide! He'll announce within two days! He's maybe, possibly, surely, definitely going to figure it out really, really soon! No shortage of people made assertive declarations about whether Joe Biden is going to run for president. Biden's delays have increasingly put Democrats on edge, eager to know whether he'll challenge front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton.

CLINTON-CYBERFAILURES

WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, has come under fierce criticism for doing business over personal email while U.S. secretary of state, putting sensitive data at risk of being hacked. But her communications may not have been any more secure had she used a State Department email address, judging by years of independent audits that excoriated the department over poor cyber security on Clinton's watch.

CIA-BRENNAN-HACKED

WASHINGTON — An anonymous hacker claims to have breached CIA Director John Brennan's personal email account and has posted documents online, including a list of email addresses purportedly from Brennan's contact file.

HAITI-VIOLENCE

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Deadly pre-election violence has flared up in and around Haiti's most notorious slum and resulted in the killings of two pregnant women and at least 13 other people in the densely-populated district of shacks, community organizers and politicians said.

UNITED STATES-AFGHANISTAN

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military acknowledges that an armored vehicle carrying U.S. personnel deliberately crashed through the closed gate of the compound in northern Afghanistan where 22 people had been killed two weeks ago in a U.S. air attack on a hospital run by Doctors Without Border.

WHITE HOUSE-ASTRONOMY NIGHT

WASHINGTON — Ahmed Mohamed, the Muslim teenager arrested after a homemade clock he brought to his Texas school was mistaken for a bomb, caps a whirlwind month with a visit to the White House. Ahmed got a personal invitation from President Barack Obama for "Astronomy Night." The two met and chatted briefly during Monday night's event.

DRONES-REGISTRATION

WASHINGTON — Concerned about rising reports of close calls and safety risks involving drones, the U.S. government announced Monday it will require many of the increasingly popular unmanned aircraft to be registered.

CONGRESS-BENGHAZI

WASHINGTON — Democrats on the Congressional committee investigating the deadly attacks in Benghazi, Libya, issue a report disputing what they say are unsubstantiated claims about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by some Republican members of Congress and presidential candidates.

CONGRESS-CRIMINAL JUSTICE

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration expresses support for bipartisan Senate legislation that would reduce prison sentences for some nonviolent drug offenders, a rare issue where conservatives and liberals agree that the U.S. system is overwhelmed and in desperate need of reform.
