Damage to underpass leads to traffic deviations near University

Tuesday, 3 November 2015, 15:32 Last update: about 11 years ago

Damage to an underpass linking the Msida skate park area and the Birkirkara by-pass has led to traffic deviations in the area, the police said.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the police said “northbound traffic from the University of Malta to Triq Dun Karm, Birkirkara is being diverted through the Msida Skate Park after damage was reported in the underpass linking the two.

“Traffic police are on site to ensure the safety of commuters until the area is inspected and any danger removed.”

In a statement in the afternoon Transport Malta said the damage was caused by a heavy vehicle. The bridge gives access to the University and Mater Dei bus terminus.  TM said it is evaluating the damage caused and works will start immediately.  It encouraged motorists to avoid the area and to drive carefully at all times.

TM also said it is assessing the damage on arterial and distributor roads caused by bad weather.  “The works to repair damages are top priority and will be carried out by a group of emergency contractors.  The temporary reinstatement exercise will be followed by more permanent interventions.”

The transport agency also announced road closures in Valletta due to works on the Castille Square project.

The upper part of Triq Sant’ Ursula will be closed to traffic after 8:30am and will remain closed at night.

Triq San Pawl will be closed to traffic after 7.30pm and will remain closed at night. Preparatory works will be carried out during the day but traffic will not be affected.

Motorists are advised to proceed with caution.
