To celebrate the opening of the Waste Transfer and Materials Recovery Facility at Tal-Kus in Xewkija, Gozo, which is due to be inaugurated this week, Wasteserv will be organising an open day at the facility on Sunday, 6th December from 10am to 4pm.
Throughout the open day visitors will be able to meet Wasteserv officials to ask questions and clarify uncertainties about how waste will be managed in Gozo following the opening of this facility. Apart from educational sessions on the various processes at the plant, visitors will be able to tour the premises on a trackless train whilst children can participate in various games and fun activities.
The Waste Transfer and Materials Recovery Facility will sort and store hazardous and non-hazardous waste before it is transferred to Malta. The facility will comprise of a controlled plant for the compaction of mixed waste originating from Gozo and Comino, equipment for the shredding of bulky waste as well as a plant for the sorting and baling of recyclable waste.
The opening of the Tal-Kus facility forms an integral part of the waste management strategy for the Maltese islands following the closure of the Qortin landfill in 2004 and subsequent rehabilitation.
