It seems that soon the voluntary organisation Maltese Cross Corps (MCC) will no longer be delivering hot meals to senior citizens and people with special needs through the Meals-on-wheels service. The Government has opted to entrust this service to a commercial entity by issuing a call for tenders for the provision and delivery of food to entitled persons. Throughout its 25-year existence, the MCC has delivered thousands of meals to entitled people uninterruptedly every day, including Sundays and public holidays, in nearly all the towns and villages of Malta.
A special word of thanks for this excellent service must go to the Committee of MCC, especially to its founder members – the late Alfred Buhagiar and Joe Rossi of the Malta Catholic Action, Joe Galea of the Social Action Movement and the hardworking administrator of the Meals-on-Wheels service, George Busuttil, who built a good rapport with the beneficiaries of the service, many of whom considered him as their confidant. May the Meals-on-Wheels service continue to be of benefit to people with special needs and the elderly who live alone and have mobility problems.
