SportMalta gave out grants amounting to €1 million to 214 sports associations and individual athletes in 2015. The final round of grants, amounting to more than €300,000, was made yesterday evening. These included assistance for ten sport tourism projects.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Sport, Chris Agius said a Bill on the reform of the commercialisation of sports facilities will be published in the coming weeks. This will allow sports facilities to be less dependent on SportMalta and become auto sufficient. The reform will also be up for public consultation.

SportMalta acting CEO Mark Cutajar said the Mr Agius and the agency hoped that 2017 – when Malta will take over the Presidency of the EU – will also be the year of sport in Malta. He urged the associations to organise international sports events in Malta during that year. He also said that the Sport Law will be reviewed to conform to modern times.

The tenders for the extension of the Cottonera Sports Complex and the Santa Venera Youth Village will be adjudicated next week.
