GERMANY-NUCLEAR FUSION — Scientists take a step closer to achieving the dream of nuclear fusion, a technology that promises virtually limitless energy with few of the risks of conventional nuclear power. 

FRANCE-MIGRANTS — Shakespeare's Globe theater company stages "Hamlet" in a sprawling, filthy migrant camp in the French port of Calais, home to thousands of people who fled the Mideast or Africa and are trying to reach Britain. 

SYRIA — Proximity talks between the Syrian government and opposition representatives continue in Geneva. 

IRELAND-ELECTION — Prime Minister Enda Kenny, whose coalition government oversaw Ireland's rapid escape from a bailout and return to Europe-leading growth, is expected to dissolve parliament in advance of a late February election. 

PARIS-ATTACKS — France's government submits a bill to parliament to extend the state of emergency in place since Nov. 13 attacks around Paris killed 130 people. 

ROMANIA-MOTORCADE MINISTER — Parliament will vote whether to lift the immunity of an ex-interior minister who prosecutors say abused his position by using an official motorcade more than 1,600 times in 10 months last year. There was public outrage when a police officer died when his motorbike hit a hole while escorting the ex-minister. 

BRITAIN-JIMMY CARTER — Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter makes a rare speech to Britain's House of Lords to discuss the eradication of the Guinea worm disease. Carter, who has recently declared himself free of brain cancer, will also answer questions.
