Vienna in Valletta at Teatru Manoel

Monday, 15 February 2016, 15:23 Last update: about 9 years ago

Vienna is a city of music and a city of dreams. No other city conjures the sound of music simply at the mention of the name. Home to Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler and site of the world famous Staatsoper, as well as the Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna shares its musical charms with the world.

On 17 February, Vienna will share an evening of these delights with Maltese audiences. Following last year's sold out performance at Teatru Manoel, musicians of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will once again join musicians of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra in music celebrating sons of the city.

Werner Hink (former Vienna Philharmonic leader), Edward Kudlak (viola) and Jurgen Fog (cello) will share the stage with flutist Rebecca Hall in Michael Haydn's sunny quartet in D major. Godfrey Mifsud (clarinet) and Maria Conrad will then join the Viennese musicians for Mozart's timeless Clarinet Quintet.

The second half of the programme will see the string quartet joined by Akos Kertesz (cello) in a rare opportunity for Maltese audiences to hear Schubert's famous quintet for two cellos. Schubert's final and greatest chamber work, it is considered a pinnacle of classical music.
