Dr Jason Azzopardi’s statement on Saviour Balzan’s programme ‘Reporter’, namely that lawyers who are appointed judges or magistrates should be at least 41 years old, is an insult to all young Maltese and Gozitan lawyers.
There are numerous examples of young lawyers, not only in Malta but all over the world, who were appointed to the Bench and distinguished themselves in their career ending it as Chief Justice. What are more important than age are the intelligence, intellect and integrity of the lawyers to be appointed. These attributes are not obtained during the lawyers’ time studying at the university, but form an integral part of their DNA.
