Polish man caught in Malta pleads guilty to murder, refuses lawyer

Kajetan Poznanski, the Polish man who was arrested in Malta and later extradited to his native country, has admitted and pleaded guilty to murder, Polish media report. 

According to the prosecutor's office, the 27 -year-old confessed to the murder of his teacher. He also said that he did not want a lawyer. The court has confirmed Poznanski's detention until 25 May 2016.

Poznanski was transported from jail to the Rakowiecka district of Warsaw for prosecution. There he heard he was being accused of murdering his Polish teacher of Italian Catherine on 3 February 2016. He confessed to the alleged offence, said Wojciech Sołdaczuk of the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw.

The prosecutor noted that the investigation is ongoing, so details of the explanations given by Poznanski could not be divulged at this point. - They may be given at a later stage of the proceedings, said Sołdaczuk.

Poznanski refused to use the services of a lawyer when he appeared for questioning at the prosecutor's office.

The Code of Criminal Procedure provides that "the accused must have defense counsel if he is a minor, deaf or blind, or if there is reasonable doubt as to his sanity.

The prosecution asked the District Court for Warsaw-Mokotów to extend the detention period for up to three months. Sołdaczuk from the Prosecutor's Office objected to any kind of bail and explained that the offense is a severe one and there are fears of another escape or hiding.

The suspect will also undergo forensic-psychiatric tests. This is likely to last up to four weeks. Investigators are also awaiting the final results of the autopsy.

Poznanski faces life imprisonment.
