Refugee family at Zabbar

Sunday, 6 March 2016, 08:12 Last update: about 9 years ago

Migration is a phenomenon affecting the whole globe, including our tiny rock! Hundreds of thousands of people are leaving the life they know behind in a bid to escape war, famine, persecution, terror and who knows what else. These people travel to an unknown future and on their arrival at a foreign land are often faced with less than favourable conditions. However, there was a slightly different ending for the Syrian family who found a home waiting for them at the Dominican Sisters in Zabbar!

Following the good advice given by Pope Francis, the Dominican Sisters in Malta, who already contribute a lot to our society in the services they offer to homeless children, have also embarked on another Christian deed. Back in November, they altered part of their convent in Zabbar to make space for a family of refugees to live independently. They furnished the house, built a kitchen, sleeping quarters and bathroom facilities. The project was finally brought to life when a Syrian family with four children were given the opportunity to start afresh after going through much turmoil in their war-afflicted country.

I would like to thank the Dominican Sisters for such a noble deed. Although not huge in numbers, these Sisters have been a blessing to our society because like many other religious orders, they work silently for the benefit of the less powerful, often voiceless human beings.
