Din l-Art Ħelwa will be hosting members and friends for its monthly talk at the Judge Caruana Curran Hall, 133, Melita Street, Valletta on Thursday 10th March at 6.30 pm.  The guest speaker will be Ms.Georgina Pavia who has had an interest in art and art history for a number of years and graduated in B.A. (Hons.) History of Art in 2013.  Her dissertation, The Artistic Development of the Via Crucis in Maltese Parishes, had aroused an interest to delve further into the study of the early nineteenth century Maltese artistic scene.  She is currently reading for her M.A. with the History of Art Department at the University of Malta.   

This talk has been programmed to be delivered during Lent as it will focus on the artistic development of the Via Crucis with particular emphasis on Malta.  One may take this artistic medium for granted and perhaps only look at the representations of the Stations of the Cross during Lent.   The Via Crucis representations should help the faithful to meditate, think and repent.  The significance of the Via Crucis has had different impacts on artists and this may be reflected through their expression in their representations.  These, together with the various media that have been used, paintings, prints, sculpture, high or low relief, and stained glass, will also be discussed.  The development of the Via Crucis through the centuries that led to the established fourteen (or fifteen) stations we know today will be charted.
