Gozo off the Beaten Track

Monday, 7 March 2016, 14:33 Last update: about 9 years ago

Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar presents its first heritage walk in Gozo!  Gozo off the Beaten Track uncovers the unknown history of parts of our sister Island in this fascinating and unique heritage walk.

While the heritage and allure of the Azure Window and the Citadella are well known to many, sites like Xerri's Grotto, the Santa Verna remains and Wied il-Mielah are less frequented and not as familiar to many.  These sites are still very significant in telling the story of the island's history.  This walking tour will in fact shine a light on such areas of Gozo which will increase our appreciation of the beautiful island.

Our tour will begin in Xaghra with a visit to Xerri's Grotto, one of the two remaining caves found on the Maltese Islands where stalagmites and stalactites can be seen.  It is an important site used by geologists to assist in historical dating.

Whilst in Xaghra, we will be guests of a traditional farm, home to one of the last remaining active field windmills on the island.  The tour will include the Statue of our Lady of Mercy next to the Plague Hospital and a walk through the oldest part of the village to the Santa Verna prehistoric remains.  After lunch at a traditional bakery, the tour will continue via the trackless train through the Xwejni Saltpans, Wied il-Ghasri, the Ta' Sdieri Area to the Wied il-Mielah coastal window.  The tour will end in Gharb, the second oldest parish outside Victoria with a visit to the parish museum.

Gozo off the Beaten Track will last the entire day and will shine a light on Gozo's beauty, unique history and authenticity.
