Education Minister Evarist Bartolo announced that MCAST is launching a new B.A. (Hons) in Journalism (MQF Level 6) degree course in the academic year 2016-2017, developed by MCAST and offered in collaboration with the Tumas Fenech Foundation for Education in Journalism.
The course will introduce students to the world of journalism. Students will be guided on how to conduct research, design, develop and produce news content to be presented to the public in a variety of formats, including print, radio, television and the Internet. The objective of this course is to train students to become learned practitioners in analysing and reporting events that shape our lives and the world around us.
The B.A. (Hons) Journalism degree enables students to be prepared for a broad spectrum of career opportunities in which they can establish themselves: News Journalists, Sports Journalists, Photo Journalists, Business Journalists, Fashion Journalists and other specialised areas available in the communications industry. It will provide students with the opportunity to create strong and effective journalistic reports using the latest audio-visual technologies and recording/editing devices, including opportunities for work placements at Public Broadcasting Services and the Media Centre, among other local media.
During the course, the students will work on real-life cases, applying theoretical knowledge to practical journalism-related projects. Although the content of this programme will be directed to students working in teams, autonomous study and personal work will be expected from individual students to help them to expand their learning curve throughout the course.
The course consists of a wide range of vocational modules that cover an array of learning opportunities that range from the social aspects of journalism to multimedia practice and news-gathering skills. Areas of learning have been carefully selected to prepare students to become proficient journalists in their own right. Competences include good news judgment, evaluation of news in a historical and social environment, as well as the ability to communicate news stories professionally.
The MCAST B.A. (Hons) Journalism course is a three-year programme to be delivered through workshops, lectures and practical exercises while students will have access to cameras and editing facilities with the aim of enabling them to improve their prospects of employment within the media sector.
