Tomorrow’s World Down’s Syndrome Day

Sunday, 20 March 2016, 09:25 Last update: about 10 years ago

Monday, 21st March is a special day for the Down’s syndrome Association.  On this day it celebrates World Down’s Syndrome Day – the 21st of the month representing the 21st chromosome, and March (the third month of the year) representing the three copies, instead of two, of the 21st chromosome which those with Down’s syndrome have. These people have an intellectual disability due to this genetic condition.

Down’s syndrome is diagnosed at birth by observation and genetic testing, and is the most common chromosome abnormality. Persons with Down’s syndrome can learn like any other given the right opportunities and support. They attend mainstream schools with their peers, work in open employment and eventually live independently.

The world needs to see the ability of the people who have Down’s syndrome and not the disability. Sometimes people feel uncomfortable around them.

This attitude does not leave room to get to know them. It can be surprising how much one can learn from them, and not only the other way round.

World Down’s Syndrome Day is celebrated to raise awareness but also to remind each and every one of us that we need to act. People with Down’s syndrome want to be accepted and be part of our society. They are eager to learn, look forward to going to work and, last but not least, to have fun with all of us. They do not want to be isolated. They want to be heard and to have a life like any other person. They are asking this, together with the right support, to fulfil their wishes and dreams.

I hope this article makes one think, understand and changes (if this is the case) one’s attitude and believes in these people. Remember, we are not all the same.  We are all human so we all have our own limits. We should see the glass as being half-full and not as half-empty.
