Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant told Croatian TV Station HRT that Europe must tackle the sources of migration flows not just the symptoms. Dr Sant, interviewed on immigration by the Croatian TV Station at the European Parliament, said the EU has a big problem to assimilate all these people that are coming in with the disruption of services, the disruption of social coherences and as well security.

“Immigration was and still is a big problem, the same thing happens in Malta. We see that with a very small influx of migrants we can get distabilised...one has to be pragmatic – one has to take the solutions that are available,” Dr Sant told HRT.

Dr Sant said the agreement with Turkey, for instance, is very fragile.  “But is there an option or an alternative to it?  And then of course there are the developments that will flow....if the flow of migrants from Turkey stops, it is very probable that it will start again form North Africa. One has to have a solution to that. The solution has got to be social, economic, humane, and it also has to be far reaching,” said the Maltese MEP.
