Allow me to comment on the news report by Ivan Camilleri entitled “Attempt to replace head of tax compliance unit” (SToM, 29th May) where it was stated that the Finance Ministry, headed by Minister Prof. Edward Scicluna, “is resisting a bid from the Office of the Prime Minister to replace the head of the Tax Compliance Unit”, Tarcisio Scicluna, who is conducting investigations about Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi over revelations about their offshore companies.
Should this be correct, one can recall that Konrad Mizzi himself publicly boasted that he had written to the Tax Compliance Unit in a bid to clear his reputation.
In spite of a denial in this sense issued by the Office of the Prime Minister, one wonders why a call to replace Tax Compliance Unit head Tarcisio Scicluna was issued as soon as evidence from Panama Papers started to emerge.
