As a school, De La Salle College decided to take part in the first edition of High 5 - Junior Mathematicians Challenge which was a national initiative targeted towards the mathematically gifted and talented primary students currently in Years 5 and 6. A very large number of students were eager to take part, however, the school could only put forward around 20 boys for this competition. Out of those nominated, 11 boys Damian Abela, Favian Karl Debono, Francesco Anthony Bezzina, Jamie Cassar, Luke Attard, Luke Magri, Luke Zammit, Mark Azzopardi, Mark Sammut Peresso, Nicolai Bonello and  Owen Portelli successfully passed on to Phase 2 of this challenge which is quite a large number considering we had 11 out of around 67 finalists.  

All of the De La Salle College students made it to Phase 3 of this challenge and were awarded with a Certificate of Merit. Mark Azzopardi, one of the Year 5 students, was awarded for the best performing student in Year 5 and was also a member in the winning group competition. Mark Azzopardi and Nicolai Bonello both received a medal for excelling in the individual test and were ranked among the top 10 in the High 5 - Junior Mathematicians Challenge. These students were prepared by Lorraine Vella who is also the Junior school maths co-ordinator.

This has been a particularly successful year for De La Salle. Apart from the High 5 - Mathematicians Challenge, students from De La Salle College, under the supervision of Matthew Kassar, participated in an art competition organised by the China Cultural Institute with the theme Modern China.  Luke Fenech from Year 4 won first prize from Group A and Isaac Scicluna from Year 5 came second from Group B. 

Nicholas Vella, Sean Kenely and Jamie Ciantar were the three Lasallian budding scientists who last March participated in the NSTF Science Expo organised annually at MCAST Paola and placed first in the Primary School Contest for Young Scientists. Their experiment focused on how different garbage bags degrade in different environments over time. These students were prepared by Claudine Suleiman.

During a special assembly held at the College grounds, Mariella Vella, headmistress and Bro Edward Galea fsc (mentor), congratulated the boys and the teachers for these achievements.
