Local champions Valletta were yesterday beaten in Faroe Islands 2-1 by B36 Torshavn, for an aggregate of 2-2 that puts Valletta through thanks to the away goal scored yesterday by Falcone.
Valletta had won the match at the Hibs Stadium last week by a solitary goal, but this lead was wiped away after only eight minutes yesterday when Thorleifsson put B36 in front.
Valletta however scored a most important equaliser on 24 minutes when Argentine striker Federico Falcone headed beautifully home a cross from the right flank. Valletta had some good moments especially at the start of the second half in which they should have taken the lead.
However B36 put the issue wide open on 66 minutes when Agnarsson beat Bonello from close range, with the Valletta defence unable to clear the danger in a rather soft goal.
Valletta were now put under pressure and their defence passed through some anxious moments.
However Valletta were also unlucky when a Jhonnattann grounder hit the base of the upright.
In stoppage time B36 pushed everything forward in search of a vital third goal, but Valletta defended well to make it to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, where they will meet 1991 European champions Red Star Belgrade.
