‘All this fuss because I replaced my butler,’ says 10 Downing Street’s Larry the Cat

Thursday, 14 July 2016, 09:10 Last update: about 9 years ago

Larry the Cat, 10 Downing Street’s official feline resident, has his own Twitter account and he has been using it to express his apparent disapproval at his new boss’ choice of Foreign Secretary – former London Mayor Boris Johnson.

He also tweeted the Foreign Office’s Chief Mouser, Palmerston, saying he was “gutted.”

The international media was yesterday focused on David Cameron’s exit and Theresa May’s appointment as new UK Prime Minister.

But particular attention was also given to Larry, who has been Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office since 2011 – specifically to the news that he will be staying at 10 Downing Street under a new master – or, as he puts it, his new butler.

Larry was brought in from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2011 after mice were spotted sprinting across Cameron's doorstep by TV cameras. The Mays and Camerons have decided thatLarry should continue to keep ravaging the rodents of Downing Street. Larry spent much of Wednesday keeping watch on the press pack instead.

Nearby, addressing the Commons for the final time as premier, Cameron declared his love for Larry and brandished a photo of him cuddling the cat in his lap. "Sadly I can't take Larry with me. He belongs to the house and the staff love him very much. As do I," Cameron said as lawmakers responded in unison: "Awwwww!"

One newspaper insinuated that David Cameron did not really love Larry, but the former PM produced the ‘proof’ on Twitter.

During his six years at 10 Downing Street Larry has met with a number of world leaders, most notably US President Barack Obama. Who knows, maybe he will be meeting Donald Trump in the near future.
