Brazilian rugby player Isadora Cerullo and her girlfriend got engaged in public at the Deodoro Stadium in Rio.

As the crowd dispersed after the Australian women's rugby team won the gold medal against New Zealand on Tuesday, Marjorie Enya, 28, a volunteer stadium worker, walked onto the pitch.

Enya asked Cerullo to marry her. Happily, Cerullo, 25, said 'yes' and the pair kissed and hugged while the crowd cheered, and millions watched online.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Brazil since 2013 and Enya told BBC Sport she had not been nervous about proposing to her partner of two years.

"I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it," she said in an interview. "She is the love of my life."

It was a romantic ending to the first ever women's rugby sevens tournament at the Olympic Games, in which Brazil finished ninth.

The BBC reported that the couple live in Sao Paulo and that Cerullo has dual Brazilian-US citizenship.

Cerullo grew up in the US, and studied medicine there, but jumped at the chance to play for Brazil.
