Iconic Azure Window in Dwejra loses another chunk (but people are still walking on it)

Monday, 29 August 2016, 09:47 Last update: about 9 years ago

Gozo’s iconic Azure Window recently lost another sizeable chunk, as highlighted in this photograph taken last week.

Geologists believe it is only a question of time before the entire rock formation in Dwejra, a must-see Gozitan tourist attraction, collapses altogether. Fishermen reportedly no longer take their boats anywhere near the formation nowadays.

Back in April 2012 a sizeable part of the seaward side of the iconic Azure Window had collapsed. A deep fissure, like the one in this photograph, had long been visible on the side of the structure where the collapse took place.

But despite the obvious danger and the warning signs put up to stop people from walking across the arch, dozens do so every day.
