A prisoner is in critical condition at Mater Dei Hospital after a self-harming incident at Corradino Correctional Facility.

A Department of Information statement did not give personal details about the man.

The statement said that at 11.30am prison officers found an inmate who had harmed himself.

Medical assistance was immediately provided and the inmate was later taken to hospital for further treatment.

The statement said that he was found to be in critical condition.

The police are investigating and a magisterial inquiry has been launched.
