Safeguarding Malta's paper heritage is the ultimate goal of the Notarial Archives Resource Council which has teamed up with KPMG in Malta to continue achieving this aim through the Adopt a Notary scheme. KPMG in Malta has donated €15,000 towards the conservation of significant volumes at the Notarial Archives, which houses over 20,000 notarial registers and other historic manuscripts spanning a period of 600 years. The Notarial Archives follows excellent international conservation standards and all conservation work is executed by a highly qualified team and supported by the office of the Notary to Government.

The first volume selected to undergo conservation treatment belongs to the acts of Notary Graziano Vassallo. Notary Graziano Vassallo was born in c. 1465 and received his warrant to practise as a Notary Public in Malta after being successfully examined in Sicily by Protonotarius Mariano Aglata on 18 August 1483. In 1492 - the year of the discovery of America by Columbus - together with his brother, who was also a notary, Mattheo, they were responsible for the defence of the island. This volume adopted by KPMG in Malta contains original copies of wills from the acts of Notary Graziano Vassallo dating from 1483 to 1546. It also contains a list of judges of the Civil Court of Mdina from 1483 to 1547.

The Adopt a Notary at the Notarial Archives has become a reputable scheme in the last years, increasing awareness about the importance of professional conservation practices. It is only through such important collaborations that the Notarial Archives Resource Council can achieve its aim to protect, showcase, and diffuse knowledge through the archives' incredible treasure trove of historical information. Donations such as this by KPMG in Malta set the perfect example for other companies and individuals to follow in order to help preserve our nation's paper heritage for future generations.
