As from next week, application for police conduct certificates may be made online, the government announced.
People holding a Maltese identity card can now apply directly for this certificate which will be sent by post, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said.
This was made possible after amendments to the law were made last June. The certificates cannot be sent by email because they need to be printed on secure paper, he said.
Type A certificates, for people with a clean record, will receive an email informing them that the certificate has been sent by post. In the case of Type B certificates, for people whose record is not clean, applicants will be asked to choose between having the certificate sent to them by registered post or collect it themselves.
In 2015, some 58,000 certificates were issued, while another 56,000 were issued until the end of October this year.
In 2015, 18,083 people were found guilty by the Maltese courts, with 11,080 involved in criminal offences while another 6,983 were guilty of contraventions.
