The mischievous spirit of carnival embedded in this year’s Qarcilla

Carnival brings about a lot of traditions together. Floats with political satire will resurface and people with foolish costumes will flood the streets of Valletta and Nadur, among others. But this carnival season will also bring about the traditional poetic farce known as Il-Qarcilla.

Il-Qarcilla used to form part of the carnival celebrations up to a 100 years ago. This year, like the year before, this traditional will resurface thanks to the genius pen of award winning author Immanuel Mifsud.

"The theme itself is never changed and I feel I have to respect that tradition," Mifsud explains in comments to The Malta Independent.

The structure will always remain, more or less the same. "It's a farce based on the matrimonial contract between a couple appearing before a notary. Naturally, the marriage in itself has changed over time. But in essence, the idea would be kept more or less the same."

Last year, Immanuel Mifsud wrote the poetic farce based on a homosexual couple. This year, the play will be based on the matrimonial contract of a heterosexual couple.

"This year's peculiarity will be the venue of where this wedding would take place," he added.

Mifsud was inspired by the most important events which recently happened in the country. "I try my best to include political comments. I did it last year, and intend to do the same this year."

"Il-Qarcilla still follows the same mischief spirit present in Dun Felic Demarco's words - rude and obscene."

When asked by this newspaper to say what being trusted with writing such a traditional piece of art is for him, Mr Mifsud said that it gives him purpose to take things lightly, "something I don't do very often," he added.

The programme this year will include a short talk which will focus on the linguistic value of Il-Qarcilla. This year's edition will be under the directorship of Joseph Galea.

The event is open to an adult audience from 18 years and over. The event is being organised by Heritage Malta together with the Department of Maltese within the university, the Education Ministry and the Carnival Committee.
