Sandro Camilleri expresses anger at bail decision for Serb who allegedly smashed glass in man's face

President of the Police Officers Union Sandro Camilleri has expressed his anger at the recent court decision to allow a man who allegedly smashed a glass in a barman's face to go out on bail.

23-year-old unemployed Srdan Simic, from Serbia, who lives in St Paul's Bay, was charged with having involuntarily caused grievous bodily harm to Ryan Magro, a barman at Munchies pub.  Mr Magro was rushed to hospital, with doctors saying he had "almost certainly" lost sight in his left eye as a result.

Sandro Camilleri said that the accused and his friends "tried to change their identity, hid, jumped from balcony to balcony trying to evade arrest, it was a hassle to catch him, his friend testified that he did not remember anything pretending that he was drunk, and a person is losing sight in his eye, and you still grant him bail?"

"while we recognise that bail is an accused's right, we can never accept a decision like this. We join together with the rest of the Maltese population in anger"
