Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, accompanied by Minister for the Environment Jose' Herrera this morning reiterated the Labour Party pledge to shut down the Sant Antnin recycling plant in Marsascala and transform it into a family park.

Addressing a press conference this morning, Dr Herrera explained that the plant will be moved to Maghtab. The whole process of clearing the area is expected to last some seven years. He said that there is a long list of environmental achievements that the government he forms part of can boast about. The Minister said the Labour Party has never forgotten its roots.

He also mentioned the latest progress at Wasteserv, that employees there have now been shifted to indefinite contract.

Sitting next to the Prime Minister was PL candidate Conrad Borg Manche, the mayor of Gzira who reminded those present how thanks to its environmental conscience, the government intervened in the MIDI, Manuel Island case.

Joseph Muscat said that during this legislature, the government has been criticized for the lack of sensitivity on environmental issues. He clarified, however, that most of the times, the PL was criticized by the applications put forward, instead of the decisions taken by the relevant authorities. He said the only real environmental which challenged this government was the American University concession for Zonqor point. He said this project was reduced by half in size and part of it was even moved to somewhere else.
