Labour Party pledges shooting range at Ta’ Kandja, boost in aquatic sector

The Labour Party, if re-elected, have pledged the creation of a shooting range at Ta'Kandja, along with other sports projects, Parliamentary Secretary for Sports Chris Agius announced this afternoon.

Speaking at a press conference at the National Pool this afternoon, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat added that this would be a "showpiece". 

With a plan to be constructed at the former SAG quarters, The shooting range will be part of a shooting sports village, which will include sections for trapping and skeeting, 25-50m shooting ranges, paintball, 300m rifle franges and dynamic ranges. He added that agricultural land will not be used.

Dr Muscat stated that he hopes this new facility will be ready in time to host the shooting world cup.

Dr Muscat also said that an aim is for all children under the age of 16 to have a type of sports activity during the week. "In the era of social media, we need to reintroduce the idea of enjoy sports activities," he said.

They also pledged to create a rugby pitch at Corradino on land near the ground of Hibs FC, whilst land in Luqa will be handed to Valletta FC as a training ground. Naxxar and Marsa Football Clubs will also be provided with grounds, according to Mr Agius.

The party is also pledging a 'push in the aquatic sector' with the creation of pools; an indoor pool at the Gozo sports centre, as well as an Olympic-size pool at Cottonera Sports Complex. It was also pledged that pools will be built at Marsaxlokk and St Julians. 

Dr Muscat also pledged advancements in the law with regards to sports, including allowing the commercialization of sports assets. He said that the government has decreased the income tax on sports activities and said that in the long-term, sports activities will be exempt from tax.
