Seven days after Malta voted for a new government, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told a cheering crowd that the day marked the choice Malta made.

The Labour Party is celebrating its second victory in a row with a mass meeting in Floriana.

“We chose unity over division, we chose the truth over lies, we chose stability over confusion, we chose this movement!”

“Malta chose this movement with the largest result the country has ever seen.”

“The difference between the parties used to be slim, but every result this movement got was significant. The result is clear, the population believes in the movement.”

Muscat, who enjoys a cult-like status among his supporters, said that this choice meant that it shows that the country is united.

He said that the Labour Party has been able to transform the political map of the Maltese islands; from ‘Marsaxlokk to Victoria.’

“When the population sees that a party trying to stop the progress of this country, they will unite to make sure it does not happen.”

Muscat, as he had done throughout the election, said that his government made mistakes, and they had recognised that, but insisted that the good that has taken place for outweighs any negativity.

It was at this point that he began mentioning his government’s achievements in the economy, in social justice, and the health and energy sectors.

He said that he was not surprised by the electoral result, which was a slight increase of the 35000 majority the party held in 2013, because “they felt the pulse of the nation.”

Referencing the Egrant allegations, he said that the biggest mistake he made was allowing the opposition to create division in the country.

“They used to say they wanted to throw my family and myself into prison, but I will the first to extend the arm of friendship to help move this country forward.”

“We need to unite this country more than it ever was.”

He said that individuals in the party were attacked only because they formed part of the movement.

Muscat promised that he will continue serving the whole country, and assured the population that the government will not grow arrogant by the electoral result, unlike his predecessors.

The PM said that the political analysis of the government’s achievements can felt within every home. 

Turning to one of his many campaign slogans, Muscat assured the crowd that ‘il-kbir ghadu gej’, and that the public will be able to feel the fruit of the current government’s accomplishments.

“We can use the money from the citizenship scheme to every family and business on the island.”

On Malta’s EU Presidency, which is due to end this month and had become an afterthought due to the election, Muscat said that the country achieved greatly on the European stage.

He then thanked former Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech for his service, who is retiring from politics and did not contest in the general election. 

He said he will defend every single person on the island when he faces the EU next week, contrary to those who sought to attack the country on an international stage.

“Malta is united, this is why we will remain on this street of progress, so we can not only be the best in Europe, but the best in the world.”                

He then urged his supportes to help unify this country.

"Speak to those who doubt this movement, take their hand and tell them 'we are all Malta'."                                                                                

Chris Cardona

Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Chris Cardona thanked the country for placing their faith in the current administration.

“On Saturday we decided to continue on the path of success, for a country of equality.”

The crowd began chanting ‘Viva L-Labour’ as Cardona said, “To continue living this dream with the best Prime Minister the country has ever seen, Joseph Muscat.”

“This is a victory for optimism and vision, against negativity and mediocrity of the Nationalist Party.”

He said that the population saw a genuine, just, and credible government that was ready to admit its mistakes.

Cardona said that a year ago the Labour Party was ready for an election.

He said that the victory was dedicated to the Party’s supporters who always believed in the party’s capabilities.

“We are here now, and we will remain here!”

Turning to the newly announced cabinet, Cardona said that the Labour Party is proud of the new MPs who made it to the government.

“We will create more opportunities, more investment. We will deliver what we promised, like we did that last four years!”

The Deputy Leader closed strongly by quoting the campaign’s slogan to resounding applause from the crowd, “L-aqwa zmien ghadu gej.”
