Circling the wagons

Bringing your team back from sheer defeat to victory in heroic fashion. To unite in defense of a common interest.

The problem is, the wagons are in disarray and the travellers cannot agree on what is the common interest or have a confused and out-dated idea of what it may be.

Some of the caravans have safely made it to the West and are now already building their vast ranches safe from attack, prospering in the new frontiers.  Others followed and are still on their way.  However, with the path already crossed before them, they are divided about whether they should circle their wagons for defence or take a risk and yee haw it all the way through the canyon.

The dilemma arises when one convoy is protected by cowboys and the other is protected by the state troopers.  The rules are different for each.  Cowboys will arm themselves and shoot at any red-skin that pops out from behind the boulders whilst the state troopers will adopt a more diplomatic attitude and try to meet with the Chief before they realise they’ve been scuppered from behind.

The common interest is arriving at their destination safely.  Those who have already arrived, though, are not that keen on accommodating a new bunch of citizens who will take from the pie.  If there is work for them in the mines or farming the land, they may come in useful.  The ladies in the saloon are also welcome.  But ordinary law-abiding citizens are frowned upon as de-stabilising and suspicious.  Are they workers or are they new prospectors?  And now that the convoy is seeing their final destination so close, will they actually ditch the regiment protecting them, unite and forge ahead on their own?

When the troopers speak to the team and try to persuade them to use their protection they are likely to be rejected.  It may lead to a split with those who are strong and independent wanting to part from those who prefer to be led and arrive safely.  But those who are left are now few and doubt if they have enough man-power to resist an attack on their own.  So, unwillingly they chose to join the others and take their chances with them.

Contenders for the job of leader of the Opposition are divided between circling the wagon and making a dash for it.

Subsequently, talk of “the workers” as a distinct entity is now out-dated or applies to another reality.  The labour party now dominates the Wild West and new frontiers beckon.  The cities are bustling and buzzing with gold-diggers and cow-boys who set the law.  The Sheriff is corrupt and on the side of the land owners and will not tolerate any law enforcement that does not play by their game or to take power from them.

As cities begin to grow and families become more prosperous, the need for law and order will become evident.   Rules will be needed again as well as method and planning.  Roads need to be built, trains need tracks, goods need to be exported, churches and schools are required.  Doctors and their medicine are now the best newcomers to the towns.

Who can organise this new order better for the country?  The corrupt Sherriff and his band or an experienced party who now finds a strong purpose in providing a forward-looking leadership for those who trust them to do the job?

But to do this, the party must indeed unite and find their common interest.  The new worker is not the one that they accompanied on the arduous journey from east to west. It is a new breed.  One made of honest citizens who are weary of the speculators and the constant attack on their rights.  They call to the experienced party to defend their rights and give them opportunities to take their destiny into their hands and ensure a bright future for their children and to protect their homes.

They look for someone who can stand up to the sheriff and make good decisions about their security within their territory, knowing the future they want is there but their home is sacred and not to be taken from them.  They know that in the past that party did great things in achieving this security and peace for them.

Living in the new frontier requires a new way of thinking and an old way of values that stand over time and place to keep it ticking.  In time, the city will find what it needs to survive and who it wants to lead them, as freely elected leaders, representing their common interest.  Some banks will continue to serve the corrupt and hide their bags of money, others will make sure that the investors can have their money invested for the good of all.

The good of all is not the good of the workers or the good of the capitalists or the good of the dictators.   The good of all is for all of society.  Those who can spend money and those who have difficulty in a wealthy environment that exploits opportunity at any cost.  Those who can afford costly cosmetic surgery and others who cannot afford to be off work for a routine operation.  Those whose children have transformed their fortune by good education and those who can only operate a factory job.  Those whose family is now a capitalistic business and others whose family is broken and struggling.  Those in good health and those who give their life for the care of others.

Both and all need a clean and fair administration, taking into consideration the ambitions and the interests of the community, the liberty to live in peace and to work for the advancement of every person, whilst looking after the environment that sustains them and gives them life and motive in the first place.

In a technological and digital world, with robots and diminishing resources, humans are suffering along with nature and some selfish people think that they can dispense with the responsibility for the common good and dominate the weak who serve no purpose in enriching them.  How sure are they, though, that they do not contribute anything to their wealth and their comfort?  Where will the next inventor or artist come from?  Who will have the strength and the evolution to withstand the climate change? How can the next generation provide and be provided for and what about the elderly?

There is not only a Now and a Me.  Whoever is capable of integrating the present with the future and anticipate what the next great model will be, will produce the right product and market it, so that there will be queues forming round the block to obtain it.  Experience and intuition are excellent qualities for success.

Nobody is dispensable but a leader is not forever and anyone looking beyond the present and into the next five years and forward will be the most likely person to meet the challenges and circle the wagon or sound the bugle.
