Tuesday, 17 October 2017, 15:10 Last update: about 9 years ago

Air Malta will start operating a twice weekly scheduled service to Sicily's Comiso airport, every Friday and Sunday as from 17 December. Comiso is an ideal destination for commuters and for weekend tourists going to Sicily from Malta and vice-versa.

Air Malta's popular Go-Light fares will apply on the route making it possible to fly for just €39 per way including taxes and charges.

Last summer the Maltese airline also restarted a two to three times weekly scheduled service to Sicily's capital Palermo and with another 14 weekly flights to Catania, Air Malta is now serving three airports to the neighbouring largest island, creating ideal connections for commuters and tourists alike.

Malta's Minister for Tourism Dr Konrad Mizzi commented: "Great to see Air Malta's growth strategy gaining momentum. Air Malta will be actively strengthening its operations in Sicily with a view to better serve Sicilian tourists and business passengers who can connect to other destinations via Malta."

Commenting on this newly launched service, Paul Sies, chief Commercial officer at Air Malta stated: "This is more good news both for Malta and Sicily. This is the first time that Air Malta will start operating to this Sicilian airport and this announcement continues to strengthen the airline's position in the Sicilian market with at least 18 weekly flights this winter between the islands. The new addition will definitely improve connectivity between both islands as through the introduction of this route we shall now be also covering the southern province of Ragusa. This welcome addition is further proof of our commitment to Malta and Sicily and will strengthen our position by tapping into new markets in line with our current growth strategy, becoming the airline of the Mediterranean Islands."

The flights went on sale on Monday, 16 October.

Comiso is surrounded by the municipalities of Chiaramonte Gulfi, Ragusa and Vittoria. The city of Comiso and the neighbouring towns and villages offer spectacular scenery and impressive landmarks. Wandering through the streets and cobbled lanes of Comiso, visitors are intrigued by the baroque architecture which is present throughout the entire city.

The Naselli Castle, which is an eight-sided tower of Gothic origin, is regarded as the main landmark of this Sicilian city. The interior of the castle is adorned and decorated with 14th century frescoes while the precious floor mosaic which used to cover the entire floor is now preserved in the municipality library.

Discovering the Unesco World Heritage Site towns of Ragusa Ibla, Modica and Scicli is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience which takes any traveller on a unique journey to ancient civilisations. The municipality of Ragusa is renowned for an exceptional cuisine through simple dishes characterised by authentic taste of tradition.

Comiso is home to a great number of Michelin star restaurants and the culinary activity of the region is placed among the first 30 Italian cities in the chart of high quality food and wines.
