A Slovenian MEP who is also the vice chair of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament said today that fellow socialist MEP Ana Gomes “does not speak for the entire S&D group.”
Earlier this week, the outspoken Gomes endorsed a tweet by former PN leader Simon Busuttil, who said that the only reason why PM Joseph Muscat did not sack Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri is because should he do so, he would have to go as well.
Gomes retweeted, saying: “That is also, unfortunately, my own conclusion. Mine/his (Muscat’s own political Group (S&D) cannot condone it; cannot act as the EPP group has been acting regarding PM Órban, protecting him because he is from “the family.”
Reacting, Fajon said: “Regarding comments from my colleague Ana Gomes MEP regarding the situation in Malta, we need to make clear that she does not speak on behalf of the S&D Group. Like in other areas, we have to and will thoroughly check all allegations and accusations which have been brought to our knowledge. On the basis of clear evidence, we will then take our decision and see if any further steps are needed."
When asked about Gomes’ comments on Tuesday evening, Muscat said he only reacts to comments made by prime ministers
