Reply to Alice Taylor

There is no greater misogynist than a woman treating other woman with so much disrespect, degrading remarks and humiliating descriptions of what is meant to be the most privileged aspect of womanhood.

Ms Taylor’s article entitled “The pro-life world is responsible for a lot of dead women” (TMIS, 4 February) in itself is the most demeaning conglomeration of confused, obscenely incorrect assertions based on nothing more but hatred, anger and anguish towards life, and most of all towards children at the most vulnerable stage of their development.

While this article claims that the pro-life world is responsible for many dead women, openly available facts claim that since 1973, when the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Roe v. Wade, there have been "well over" 54 million abortions.

Approximately 926,200 abortions were performed in 2014, down 12 per cent from 1.06 million in 2011. In 2014, some 1.5 per cent of women aged 15– 44 had an abortion. Just under half of these women (45 per cent) reported having a previous abortion.

Nineteen per cent of pregnancies (excluding miscarriages) in 2014 ended in abortion

The three most common reasons, each cited by threefourths of patients, were: concern for or responsibility to other individuals; the inability to afford raising a child; the belief that having a baby would interfere with work, school or the ability to care for dependents; half said they did not want to be a single parent or were having problems with their husband or partner.

Pregnancy resulting from rape and incest account to less than one per cent of all abortions and most often is not even quoted in many statistics.

There are simply no other ways of describing the remarks made by the author other than being obtuse and slandering, aimed at undermining those of us in society who are actively involved in working so much to ensure that those most vulnerable are protected by our legal framework.

Indeed, we need to support mothers-to-be who are facing the most difficult moments of their life. There is so much that can be done.

As Pro-Life, our focus and energy is focused at proposing tangible help in formulating a better legislation aimed at not only improving our society in general, but also more specifically aimed at introducing more support services for those situations which are grossly and barbarically abused by the author of this article.

On the other side of the fence, we have little brains working at scripting voluminous bile regarding those of us who have respect for life from its earliest existence. Tiny Lilliputian bigots with nothing to share, no value to add and simply no valuable contribution to the discussion.

Their only way is to use the most defeatist, most shallow form of mind control by suggesting abortion to be the only way out for those mothers-tobe who are facing the reality of their lives.

There is simply no place for such arrogance as demonstrated by the author of this piece, in our progressive society. There is simply no space for those like the author who have nothing better to say than discussing the topic and debating it is just a "favourite pasttime".
