A shortage of medication to treat Thyroid hormone deficiency in private hospitals has now been solved, a Mater Dei Hospital official told The Malta Independent, adding that the hospital pharmacy will no longer sell the medication to private patients while stocks in the private sector last.
Recently, people suffering from the condition were coming across difficulties to get their hands on the medicinal products from local pharmacies, many turning to public Facebook groups to ask which pharmacies still have the products available.
In light of this, this newsroom had contacted the Health Ministry in order to inquire about the reason for the shortage.
"The government has stocks of Eltroxin and Levohtyroxine," Minister for Health Chris Fearne replied.
"The reports you mention are in relation to stocks in private pharmacies. To allow patients to keep receiving medication, Mater Dei pharmacy has been authorised to sell to private patients for as long as the shortage in private pharmacies persists."
Mater Dei Hospital Pharmacy can be found on the ground floor in the Outpatient Department. It is open between 8am and 2pm between Monday and Friday, and between 8am till 12.15pm on Saturdays.
