This year's European Money Week programme, coordinated by the Malta Bankers' Association (MBA), included an innovative event entitled Economics for Success. Based on the Junior Achievement Young Enterprise Malta (JAYE Malta) programme, this activity was conducted by the MBA in collaboration with JAYE Malta, and was sponsored and hosted by the Central Bank of Malta at its newly built Binja Laparelli Conference Centre. Around 50 Year-nine and Year-10 students, aged 13 to 14, participated in this full morning event that was aimed at increasing their financial literacy, employability and entrepreneurial skills.

The programme covers three modules, taking students along a journey covering the world of work, financial goal-setting and personal budgeting in a fun and interactive manner. During module one, entitled Mirror, Mirror, students explore different career clusters and jobs that are available to them in the world of work. In the next module, they interact with factors enabling them to 'Be a Success', such as setting goals for their financial future and understanding the connection between their education today, their future careers tomorrow and their personal finances as they make career/education decisions. The final module entitled "Keeping your Balance", affords students the opportunity to evaluate how best to budget for necessities and saving, based on a salary calculated by the choices they made in a previous module. Students may access an online interactive life simulation game, "Plan Your Future", whereby they create a character who takes a number of decisions, helps that character to land a job and then requires it to manage its expenses and finance. The game can be played at home.

The activity was delivered by MBA affiliate volunteers who brought an extra element to the students through their industry expertise. The initiative was very well-received by the students and was a successful addition to the programme of activities organised by the MBA for this fourth annual European Money Week.
