Now that the country has approved granting 16-year-olds the right to vote, the youth section of the Labour Party has issued a press release saying it is now time to build a generation amongst youngsters engaged in political activism.
“The steps taken by parliament yesterday is evidence how persistence and strong beliefs bring results. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat dreamed of this day ten years ago and it has now become reality. Our country has become the second in Europe to introduce this right”.
The youth section says that the next step is to officially launch a Generation-16 campaign targeting the youngest members of the party and giving them space to develop their political thoughts and criticism.
Several activities and discussions aimed towards attracting new voters will be held during this campaign.
A sub-committee within the youth section of the Labour party has already began operating, composed of 16 and 17-year-olds.
The youth committee is having serious discussions about 16 and 17-year-old candidates for local council elections in order to “absorb the maximum potential of our youths”.
