Thursday, 8 March 2018, 10:18 Last update: about 8 years ago

British High Commissioner to Malta Stuart Gill visited the University of Malta to discuss the ongoing Brexit negotiations with students reading for a degree in International Relations.

The High Commissioner spoke about the processes involved in the negotiations and outlined the UK government's key priorities for Brexit as set out by Prime Minister Theresa May. These include citizens' rights, trade, Ireland, defence and security. He said the aim was to lead to secure a deep and special partnership between Britain and the EU.

The High Commissioner also emphasised that although the UK is leaving the EU, it is committed to continue building on the already excellent bilateral links that exist with the Maltese government.

High Commissioner Gill commented: "Although the UK is leaving the EU, we will maintain the strong relationship that we have with Malta and as we are both Commonwealth countries we have particularly strong links which will be further deepened.

"Our future partnership with the EU should be ambitious. We can be optimistic about what we can achieve. We are leaving the EU but we are not leaving Europe."
