Waterpolo: Sliema pip Neptunes in dramatic win, San Giljan register third victory, against Valletta

Sliema Frank Salt registered a fine victory over their eternal rivals Neptunes Leo Vegas in a closely contested match at the National Pool. Michael Spiteri Staines, David Fenech and Zach Mizzi each scored a brace for Sliema to determine the result of the encounter.  Before the match, a minute's silence was held in honour of veteran Neptunes stalwart Dr Lawrence Manche' who passed away earlier this week at the venerable age of 93.

The first session went Neptunes' way with goals from Niki Lanzon and Jake Muscat with David Fenech replying for Sliema. However Sliema registered parity winning the second session 2-1 themselves. Michael Cordina and Zach Mizzi scored for Sliema with Nikolai Zammit replying for Neptunes.

The third session saw Sliema romp ahead winning by four goals to nil with goals coming from Michael Spiteri Staines, David Fenech, Nicholas Bugelli and Michael Spiteri staines. It seemed that Sliema were home and dry but Neptunes came back strongly in the final session winning it 5-2. Niki Lanzon, Jordan Camilleri and Miguel Zammit brought the score to within a whisker but Jerome Gabaretta and Zach Mizzi managed to keep Sliema ahead for a famous victory.

San Giljan eased past Valletta in what seemed to be another rout although the last three sessions were actually in perfect parity for a respectable result. The Saints roared ahead in the first session winning it 4-0. Dino Zammit scored a brace with Matthew Zammit and Ben Plumpton scoring the other goals.

The second session ended 2-2 with San Giljan scoring through Paul Fava and Dino Zammit and Valletta replying with goals from Michele Lanzon and James Spiteri Staines. The third session also ended in a draw this time 1-1 with Peter Borg scoring again for San Giljan and Karl Galea replying for Valletta.

The fourth session was another draw that ended 3-3 with Peter Borg, Dino Zammit and Ben Plumpton scoring for San Giljan and Valletta replying through Timmy Agius, Niki Farrugia and Kurt Galea.
