Studenti Demokristjani Maltin (SDM) has expressed concern over the Planning Authority's recent announcement, that a decision on the proposed refurbishment and upgrading of the University track area was deferred.

The decision was deferred as suggestions for the building of an underground car park to try and solve the parking issues in the area were raised.

"As SDM, we have been working tirelessly since 2016, mainly through our 'Be a Winner' campaign - which highlighted the fact that the sports facilities at the University of Malta are currently substandard, not adequate, lacking basic necessities."

"We have always advocated for having state of the art Sports Facilities. KSU and the University Council should be kept informed at all times about any developments regarding the project so that it can ensure that the students' needs and interests are catered for."

"A consultation project should also be held with the University Sports' students, as well as Student Organisations - mainly those related to Sports - so as to ensure that this project will affect them positively."

"From what was reported in the media, SDM understands that the project was deferred because the idea of an underground car park was also brought to the table. While appreciating that parking in the area is problematic, especially at University, we believe that such an important infrastructural improvement should not be held back."

"We call for all relevant parties to seriously consider this project and move forward as soon as possible, as long as everything is in line with the initial Master Plan of the improvement of the University of Malta. "
