Malta wins three bronze medals in second edition of Championships of the Small States of Europe

Malta won three bronze medals in the second edition of the Championships of the Small States of Europe held in Liechtenstein on the 9th of June. This was a prestigious achievement in a Championship that comprises no less than eighteen European Federations.

The first medal of the day for the Maltese was won by Charlotte Wingfield who in the Women's 200m posted the third best overall time of 24.08, a performance which was bettered only by Zakiyya Hasanova of Azerbaijan who clocked 23.56 and that of the Icelandic girl Guðbjörg Jóna Bjarnadóttir who was a close second in 23.61.

Charlotte's medal was soon followed by another bronze medal won by Janet Richard in the Women's 400m. Running in the first series, Janet ran a strong time of 56.38 and in the end she was only beaten by Kalliopi Kountouri of Cyprus who clocked 54.64 and Gayane Chiloyanof Armenia who clocked 55.40.

The third and final bronze medal was won by the Women's Team in the Swedish Relay.  The Maltese Team comprised of Rachel Fitz (100m), Sarah Busuttil (200m), Ylenia Pace (300m) and Janet Richard (400m), won their heat in a time of 2:14.73 but after the second heat were then beaten to third place by Cyprus and Iceland who shared first place in a time of 2:11.36.
