Tuesday, 12 June 2018, 10:30 Last update: about 9 years ago

Now way into the new Millennium, Pembroke Athleta, the foremost Track & Field Club in Malta over the last two decades, have good, valid reasons to believe that efforts to give to the nation high-quality athletes have constantly brought notable results. Results that repeatedly make their way into Record Books and find acceptance by National Selection bodies each time MALTA enters the international circuit.  Most of these athletes Pembroke has brought up from among its youth ranks, where years of preparation through dedicated, competent and highly prepared coaches have witnessed unrivalled blossoming of talent.

One such flower just blooming and turning heads is a girl that can be best associated with the noun determination as with the name of Alessia Cristina - for certain one name soon to become household among all lovers of sport.  Just turned 15 years in March, Alessia has already tasted international fare as part of an MAAA selection competing regularly in the Czech Republic, where she established two Games' records, in the 300m event and as part of the 4 x 60m relay team.  Recently, within the Malta Youth Team at the Juex des Iles (Island Games) better known as COGI, held in Sicily, she first finished third in the 100m, followed this up by a second placing in the 200m and capped it all by forming part of the victorious 4 x 100m relay team.

Getting more into her stride, figuratively speaking, at her last outing Alessia shattered a time of 13-year standing in the 200m for Under 16 youth girls - not by a whisker, as records usually go by, but by 21 hundredths of a second - setting a new mark of 25.01 seconds.  Needless to say, during the National Championships she had already been crowned Champion for both these sprint events and her focus for the time being is on laying a claim to a spot on the Seniors National team, albeit, for the present, just on the relay team - top Maltese female sprinter ought to be a natural step for this youngster in a few years time.  Naturally, her ultimate goal is to be the BEST sprint-flyer in athletics MALTA, and her proud club Pembroke Athleta, will have best brought to a zenith.
