Eight teams have secured spots in the knockout stage at the World Cup after the chaotic conclusions of Monday's matches. Nine teams have been eliminated. Fifteen teams still have a chance. With two groups finished and six still playing, here's a look at who's in, who's out and possible scenarios at the World Cup.
GROUP A
Uruguay locked up first place with a 3-0 win Monday over Russia, which advanced anyway after winning its first two matches. Uruguay will play Portugal on Saturday in Sochi. Russia takes on Spain on Sunday at Luzhniki Stadium, the larger of the two Moscow venues. Egypt and Saudi Arabia have been eliminated.
GROUP B
Spain emerged atop the group after simultaneous, frenetic finishes in the night games. Spain got a late equalizer in a 2-2 draw with Morocco and Portugal had a 1-1 draw with Iran. The 2010 World Cup champion Spaniards will play the host Russians to start the knockout stage, while reigning European champion Portugal will play Uruguay. Morocco and Iran have been eliminated.
GROUP C
France and Denmark played to a forgettable 0-0 draw Tuesday in Moscow in the tournament's first scoreless game , giving France the point it needed to win the group and Denmark the point it needed to make sure it moved on, too. The Danes would have advanced anyway since Australia fell 2-0 to Peru . Australia and Peru were eliminated.
GROUP D
Croatia plowed through the group, winning all three games including a 2-1 defeat of Iceland on Tuesday that set up a date with Denmark in the round of 16. Argentina seized the second spot from Nigeria on Marcos Rojo's 86th-minute strike in St. Petersburg. Lionel Messi, who scored the opener, and his teammates take on France in the knockout round. Nigeria and Iceland were eliminated.
GROUP E
Brazil took the top spot with a 2-0 win Wednesday over Serbia, which could have advanced with a victory. Brazil will play Mexico in the knockout stage. Switzerland's 2-2 draw with Costa Rica was enough to lock up second place and a knockout-stage match with Sweden. Serbia and Costa Rica were eliminated.
GROUP F
Defending champion Germany staggered out of the tournament Wednesday with a 2-0 loss to South Korea. Sweden beat Mexico 3-0 to win the group and gets Switzerland to start the knockout stage. Mexico backed into the round of 16 courtesy of South Korea's shocking win over Germany and will next play Brazil. Germany and South Korea were eliminated.
GROUP G
Belgium and England play each other Thursday to determine who wins the group and who finishes second. Tunisia and Panama are out of contention.
GROUP H
Japan and Senegal lead the group with four points apiece. Colombia has three and would advance if it beats Senegal, and both could go through with a draw if Japan loses. Poland is eliminated.
