Waterpolo: No date set for Dino Zammit’s return to play

Friday, 27 July 2018, 16:51 Last update: about 8 years ago

No date has been set for Dino Zammit’s return to play after the San Giljan player suffered an injury while representing Malta at the European waterpolo championships, held in Spain.

A statement issued jointly by the Aquatic Sports Association and San Giljan ASC with the player’s consent said that no surgery is required for now and the player is “is to commence immediate intensive focused rehabilitation. An estimated recovery time is being reserved following re-assessment in 10 days. It is not possible to ascertain a return-to-play date at this time,” the statement said.

Zammit will miss several San Giljan games and it cannot be excluded that he will miss the rest of the reason, including the knock-out final between his club and Neptunes in early September.

The statement said that Zammit sustained a serious left shoulder injury during the LEN 33rd European Championship match Malta vs France on 20 July that required a decision to stop play. He was appropriately immobilized and taken to hospital for investigations. X-Rays were taken that excluded any fractures and he was discharged without a diagnosis / prognosis but referred for further investigations in Malta.

An MR Arthrogram was organized on 26 July, which established that the player had suffered a partial tear with detachment of the pectoralis major tendon (this is the attachment part of the largest of the chest muscles to the bone).
