MPT joins Women in Transport to encourage the presence of women in the transport sector

Malta Public Transport, the private company operating the route buses, joined the Women in Transport-EU Platform for Change, a programme whose objective is to strengthen women's employment and equal opportunities in the transport sector.

This project is being promoted by the European Commission to promote women's access to the transport sector, stating that with only 22% of women, the transport sector is not gender balanced. Malta Public Transport employs over 1,300 people, out of whom around 150 are women. While there is a low female representation among drivers and mechanics, as is seen in the industry worldwide, women make up around one third of the local management team at Malta Public Transport.

Malta Public Transport is committed to promote the employment of women in the transport sector and fight against discrimination based on gender. By joining this programme the company, together with others, is committed to promoting women's work, sharing ideas and good practices in different areas of the transport sector, ensuring a balance between work and family and other actions that will benefit both men and women and that will contribute to eliminating gender stereotypes.

"We would like to attract more women to join our company and we have implemented a number of measures in the past three years to achieve this. These include the new collective agreement which supports a better work-life balance, upgraded facilities for employees, as well as programmes for knowledge and skills development," explained Konrad Pulé, general manager at Malta Public Transport.

After signing the Women in Transport programme, Malta Public Transport continues with its commitment to the promotion of equal opportunities with regard to recruitment, career development and representation at all levels, including management and decision-making and the growth of diverse talent within the company.
