Another day karozzin incident has taken place, this time in Valletta.
A photo uploaded to Facebook by Animal Liberation Malta shows that a horse carriage has overturned on Great Siege road, coming to a rest against a crash barrier. It appears that the horse went over the barrier.
The police told sections of the press that both cabby and horse were unharmed after the animal ‘slipped.’
Reacting, the animal rights group said: “Yet another horse 'slips' on the roads of Valletta. Horses pull heavy carriages the whole day under the blazing sun, are in many cases dehydrated, the roads are uneven with countless potholes, there is oil from cars, there is traffic and there is noise. This is an unnatural environment for horses to be in. No wonder they are slipping/falling/passing out/having heart attacks and dying due to stress and being overworked.”
On 8 August, a horse collapsed and died in Floriana while ferrying tourists up from the cruise liner terminal.
Veterinarians later concluded that a combination of excessive heat, heavy loads and the steep route contributed to the animal’s death.
Environment Minister Jose Herrera said the cabby would be prosecuted for animal cruelty.
A few days previous another horse had collapsed while pulling a karozzin in sweltering heat in Floriana. The authorities had later said that the mare had only suffered minor injuries and that there were no signs of animal cruelty.
