Pressure group Occupy Justice today called for the resignation or removal of Economy Minister chris Cardona, following the latest revelations by the Daphne Project regarding the investigation into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

In a report published by La Repubblica, one of the partners in the consortium, it was claimed that Economy Minister Chris Cardona and one of the suspects in Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder, Alfred Degiorgio, had attended a small bachelor’s party in Fawwara on 29 June 2017 – four months before Caruana Galizia was killed in a car bomb.

Today, Occupy Justice activists said that Cardona, after the original revelations, had said he did not know Alfred Degiorgio. “Now it results that Cardona lied about this again. Bit by bit investigative journalism is revealing what is being hidden by our institutions.”

They said that hours after the murder the police came to the conclusion that there was no political involvement in the inquiry, and that the inquiry was under the strict control of the Deputy Commissioner Silvio Valletta until the constitutional court judgement.

The Constitutional Court upheld a judgment ruling that the involvement of Deputy Commissioner of Police Silvio Valletta in the investigation into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia breached her family’s fundamental human rights.

They said that government, regardless of the court’s decision, appealed to keep Valletta there.

The activists said that as long as there continues to be the suspicion of political interference then they will continue to have suspicions.

They urged the resignation of Chris Cardona and an investigation into what he knows and why he lied. If he does not, they said they urge the Prime Minister to fire Cardona as if he doesn’t “it would again confirm the conspiracy to hide the truth would be led by Muscat himself.”

Standing outside the Valletta police station, they filed a police report with the information released by the Daphne Project, requesting further investigation.
