The ‘Arka Declaration’ on inclusiveness has been signed by civil society in Gozo at the Arka Foundation, Għajnsielem Gozo.
The ‘Arka Declaration’ proposes initiatives in favour of Gozitans with mental problems, hearing difficulties or are victims of ‘addiction’. It also promotes full equality for LGBTI+ community members in Gozo insisting on the need to address medical, social and cultural problems.
The declaration urges government to take direct interest in the promotion of integration and inclusiveness in Gozo and proposes the financing of a policy in favour of inclusivity aimed specifically at the particular needs of Gozo.
The Maltese MEP thanked the Gozitan civil society members for their efforts to ensure equal rights for those who may feel excluded on the island. The challenges and problems of double insularity and of size faced by Gozo as an island also apply to citizens living there who face social, economic and cultural disadvantages.
“The input of civil society must remain a central element.” emphasised the Maltese MEP
Sant welcomed the Declaration and said it should serve as a tool by which to strengthen the solidarity and outreach needed to promote inclusivity in Gozo.
This initiative was promoted and organised with the collaboration of MEP Alfred Sant, his Gozo Office and the S&D Group at the European Parliament.
